This type of chocolate is characterized by its relatively bitter taste. Furthermore, bitter chocolate is also better for overall health due to its lower sugar content.<\/p>\n<p>With new discoveries about the active phenolic compounds in cocoa, negative perceptions about chocolate consumption are beginning to change. Chocolate has long been associated with bad health news due to its fat content, and its consumption has been linked to high blood pressure, obesity, acne, diabetes, and coronary artery disease.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, new findings indicate that consuming small portions of chocolate during pregnancy may offer the following potential benefits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reduces the risk of preeclampsia and hypertension<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A study found that consuming chocolate during the first or third trimester of pregnancy was associated with a reduced risk of preeclampsia, as well as a lower risk of developing high blood pressure (hypertension) during the first trimester. Preeclampsia is a potentially life-threatening condition in which a pregnant woman&#039;s blood pressure suddenly rises drastically to dangerously high levels. Results showed that pregnant women who regularly consumed 1-3 servings of chocolate per week had a 50 percent lower risk of preeclampsia during the first trimester.<\/p>\n<p>However, this study has several shortcomings that are worth discussing. First, it interviewed pregnant women less than 16 weeks pregnant about their chocolate consumption during the first trimester. In other words, the answers relied heavily on the mothers&#039; memories, which may not be very accurate. Second, the study did not differentiate between dark and light chocolate in the interviews and analyses. This may have influenced the results.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Effect of Dark Chocolate Consumption on the Risk of Preeclampsia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/news\/2010\/July07\/Pages\/no-firm-evidence-chocolate-lowers-pre-eclampsia-risk.aspx\">Studies<\/a> this is starting from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alodokter.com\/mengambil-manfaat-cokelat-untuk-kesehatan\">the effect of chocolate that can reduce the risk of heart disease<\/a>. Researchers in previous studies stated that consuming chocolate, especially <em>dark chocolate, <\/em>can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Chocolate contains <em>flavonol<\/em> which is known to be linked to a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and lower cholesterol levels. The darker the chocolate, the more flavonols it contains.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the risk factors for preeclampsia are similar to those for cardiovascular disease. Therefore, they then investigated whether there was a true link between chocolate consumption and a reduced risk of preeclampsia in pregnant women. The study was conducted on nearly 3,000 pregnant women with pregnancies less than 16 weeks old. Although this study was well-conducted, it does not yet provide strong evidence that chocolate can protect pregnant women from the risk of preeclampsia. Further research is needed to confirm and explain the protective effect of chocolate on the risk of preeclampsia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For fetal growth and development<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/306103.php\">studies<\/a> A different study concluded that consuming 30 grams of chocolate per day during pregnancy may benefit fetal growth and development. The study found significant improvements in uteroplacental (uterine and placental) blood flow using a device. <em>Doppler<\/em> in mothers who consumed chocolate, both high and low in flavonol content. This suggests that chocolate may be beneficial for fetal growth and development, as well as having a positive impact on the placenta. This improvement is much greater than what is typically expected.<\/p>\n<p>This enhancing effect is not solely and directly due to the content <em>flavanol<\/em> in chocolate. Researchers also cannot speculate on the overall effect of chocolate on the risk of preeclampsia based on the study results because the study only involved one group of pregnant women who consumed chocolate, so there was no comparison with the group of pregnant women who did not consume chocolate. Therefore, further, more in-depth research is needed on this matter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How much chocolate can pregnant women consume?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rqr.umontreal.ca\/index.php\/en\/members\/emmanuel-bujold\">professor of obstetrics and gynecology<\/a> Studies have shown that regularly consuming small portions of dark chocolate starting in the first trimester of pregnancy can improve placental function. The small portion in question is 30 grams per day, equivalent to just a few bites.<\/p>\n<p>Eating too much chocolate is also not good for pregnant women, as it can increase weight gain beyond the ideal level. Furthermore, there are many other nutrients pregnant women need, such as folate, protein, calcium, and iron, so don&#039;t focus solely on chocolate.<\/p>\n<p>Experts advise consuming chocolate only occasionally rather than regularly. Furthermore, chocolate contains caffeine, which should only be consumed in small amounts during pregnancy, and it&#039;s also high in calories and fat.
